08/26/08 - Main Street Project Issues Statement of Solidarity with ICE Raid Detainees in Mississippi

Recent actions deemed "immoral and inhumane"

MINNEAPOLIS - The Main Street Project issued a statement of solidarity today with those arrested and detained in Monday's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in Laurel Mississippi.

"We stand in solidarity and support with the approximately 350 individuals and their families taken as part of Monday's raid on Howard Industries. The Main Street Project echoes the statements of others in calling the actions by federal authorities immoral and a humanitarian crisis. We are committed to working with individuals and families regardless of status, who are entitled to due process of law, because we know that raids affect not only the individuals detained during the raid and their loved ones, but also the whole community," Amalia Anderson, Program Director of The Main Street Project said.

Currently, the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA) in Jackson, MS is helping to coordinate efforts to aid families in the Laurel region. As of late Monday afternoon, MIRA had prepared social services and legal assistance for all persons and families affected by the ICE raid.

MIRA needs attorneys to volunteer their services and help the detained workers. Donations are also needed to help the affected families and community.
