Main Street Project welcomes Alex Christensen as Food Systems Intern
Hello Good People! My name is Alex Christensen and I am the latest addition to the Main Street Project team.
I am a recent college graduate, with a BA in Environmental Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Born in Seattle, I grew up in Minneapolis in a progressive home where both my parents, my mother in particular, were environmental and political activists (my mom took me to my first protest when I was 4 months old). As a child, discussion at the dinner table revolved as readily around notions of environmentalism as it did around family or what I learned at school that day. Sustainable food has been a focal point in my life ever since.
During college, I studied in India for a semester on a program called “Social Justice, Peace, & Development,” in which sustainable agriculture, especially its struggles in the shadow of looming agribusiness, were central to understanding the lives of the farmers, activists, and adivasi (indigenous) people we met. Upon returning from abroad, I worked as a Farmer Intern on the college’s student-run organic garden, Big Hill Farm. As a senior, my final projects to secure my Environmental Studies major finalized the years-long process of getting a composter on campus, as well as redesigning the syllabus for a Local Foods Production class, for which I got to be the TA.
I am excited to be working work Main Street Project! Main Street synthesizes my interests in Environmental and Food Justice with my passion for Racial and Economic Justice in ways that I have never had access to. My duties with Main Street revolve around big picture planning, organizing conference calls and meetings, growing social media, and networking within new circles.
There is huge potential for growth through the sustainable business model we’re building, and the willingness of likeminded others to collaborate and combine resources has already been inspiring. I look forward to meeting more passionate activists and advocates, farmers and fundraisers, as my Main Street journey unfolds.
See you soon! Alex
